EXPERIENCING GOD

  1.  ...as the first Christians did -- They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, to the breaking of the bread and to prayer... All the believers were together and had everything in common... They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.  And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.  (Acts 2:42ff)  Being together with glad and sincere hearts -- this can happen when Christians come together in Jesus' name.  Many of us are having opportunity to enjoy these good things as we meet for the Stewardship Studies and Home Desserts.  If you haven't made one yet, it's not too late.

  1. Men's Bible Study  -- Every Friday, men are invited to take part in a contemplative Bible reading group -- not so much to learn about the Bible, as to learn from it.  We employ a centuries-old practice of taking a short passage and prayerfully pondering 1) what it means, 2) what God is saying through it to us individually, and 3) what God is calling us to do about it.  An every-week-commitment is not required.  7:35-8:35 am at the Giesslers' home - 647 Patrice Dr., SE Leesburg.
  2. Soul Food Bible Study -- Tonight, 7:00 pm, outlet mall food court.  Session 3 of the 4-week stewardship study.  All are welcome.
  3. Saturday Morning Women's Home Group -- The next meeting will be April 19 at South Street Under, 7;30 am.  Then we'll go to the Flower & Garden Show together.
  4. Youth Leader -- We are seeking to hire a part time (8 hours/week) youth leader.  This person will be actively involved in leading youth group(s), spiritually mentoring middle and high school students, and relating to them in their daily teenage lives.  They will be hired as soon as possible.  You may refer any candidates you strongly recommend to Cliff Sokol.
  5. Middle School Sunday Morning class -- The second, third and fourth Sundays of each month, our middle school class begins following songs of praise (approx. 10:30-11:15). The class is team taught by Jeff Good, Cindy Sokol and Monica Lambert.
  6. Middle School Youth Group -- Look for an email.  (Plan is pending weather forecast.)  If you're involved in an extra-curricular that people can attend, let us know! High School Sunday Morning class -- The second and third Sundays of each month, our high school class begins following songs of praise (approx. 10:30-11:15). The class is taught by Joelle Good.
  7. High School Youth --  Look for an email.  (Plan is pending weather forecast.)  If you're involved in an extra-curricular that people can attend, let us know!

  10. You're Welcome at Leadership Team -- The monthly principal leadership meeting of the church takes place this Thursday night at the Evergreen House, starting at 7:30 pm.  Everyone intrerested is welcome.
"Growing Through Love "

  1. Overview -- This is the name of our new capital campaign.  Throughout the campaign's 6-week stewardship focus (culminating May 4), there are seven initiatives that everyone in the church (member or regular attender) is encouraged to take part in.  They are:  1) a 4-week Bible study, 2) a home-based dessert gathering, 3) a 4-week Sunday morning message series, 4) a twenty-one daily devotional book, 5) a prayer walk on the site of the future building, 6) a church-wide Family Luau, and 7) commitment Sunday.  You'll hear more about all these seven initiatives as they get closer.
  2. Stewardship Studies -- Our seven studies are all underway.  If you can't make your primary one one week, you can pick up that session by attending another one.
  3. Home Dessert Meetings -- Three reasons you should attend one:  1)  Learn about Evergreen's building plans and process (and/or have it refreshed for you) including ample time for Q & A.  2)  Meet some great people and get to know others better, by taking part in meaningful conversation led by Pastor Chip.  3)  Enjoy dessert & casual fellowship in the home of one of our couteous hosts.  There are two remaining.  Please email Patty W. (PWhite8@verizon.net) to make a reservation for one.  Friday, April 11 at Sandra & Bart van Roekel's; and Sunday, April 13 at Patty & Craig White's.  All are scheduled for 7:00-8:30 pm.
  4. 21-Day Devotional Guides -- Twenty-one days of personal stories and meditations written by your fellow Evergreen brothers & sisters are beautifully presented in these free books.  They are available at the Home Desserts, and this Sunday.  The 21 days begins on Monday, April 14.
  5. Prayer Walk -- A special time of corporate prayer will be held at the Evergreen property near the end of the campaign.  This event was previously publicized for April 26, but the new and improved date is Friday, May 2.  Please make this change to your calendar.
  6. Hawaii on My Mind -- The Luau Celebration on April 27 (4-6:30 pm) needs folks to help with set-up and clean up at Loudoun Country Day School.  Please contact Tony W. to enlist.  twools@yahoo.com

EXALTING GOD

  1. This Sunday:   "Growing Through Love"...  It's God who has, does and will make us grow, as individuals and as a church.  This week we'll look at what God has done.  God has been faithful in the life of Evergreen Church.
  2. Recordings of Worship @ Evergreen -- Were you in the Greenhouse?  Were you out of town?  That doesn't mean you have to totally miss out on worship.  A limited number of wonderful, user-friendly cds are available each Sunday for your use and for you to give to friends who are looking for a church, or who you sense could really benefit from hearing the service.  If you haven't yet, you've got to try them out.  Pick one up, listen, then give it away (or turn it back in the next week).  Visit the table right outside the Worship Center door.  There'll be a basket on the table if you can make a donation (up to $5) to help cover the cost of production.
  3. Hospitality Team -- This team of generous and faithful people who bless everyone in the church with refreshments after worship every Sunday has one opening for someone to partner with the Hanrahans on the first Sunday of each month.  Please see Dennis or email Becky (brokerbec@verizon.net) to join the team or find out more.
  4. Opening on the Set-Up Team -- Beginning in April there is room for 1 or 2 people to serve once/month on the set-up team -- 45 minutes before and after worship on Sundays.  Let Steve H. or Chip G. know of your interest.
  5. Greenhouse News --  Thanks be to God for our wonderful children, and for our teachers and assistants!   And great thanks to the 32 members of our Greenhouse staff!  There are a few openings for teachers & assistants.  Please contact Rick Gibbs to talk about where you offer your gifts in service to God.
  6. Weekly Prayer --  Come join in prayer on Tuesday evenings from 7-7:30 pm at the Evergreen House.  All are welcome.  No experience necessary.
  7. Next Steps -- Have you applied one of these this week?
    1. Do you think God may want you to have another friend?  To be a friend?  Attend a home dessert this week.  Sign up this morning.  Watch what God may grow out of a home dessert.
    2. None of us can underwrite the entire Evergreen Church worship & ministry center (probably).  But we can each begin to pray about how God would have us be a part (small or big) of what He will grow, for the sake of love.
    3. What situation is on your heart that a lot of love could fix?  Invest the love you have (even if it’s just a little), and ask God to multiply it.

EXTENDING GOD TO OTHERS

  1. Dinner at LEHS --  April 17 is our next monthly occasion to make and serve dinner to our neighbors at Loudoun Emergency Homeless Shelter.  Contact Patty W. to serve on the team.
  2. Serving in Iraq -- Ed & Janet Gorski's son-in-law Tim will take command this week of a U.S. Army Company in Northern Iraq (130 personnel).  Please pray for his safety & wisdom.  And if you'd like to send him a letter or card of encouragement, you can send it to...  Tim Garland; Charlie Company, 1/87 IN; FOB Warrior; APO AE 09338.  (A regular first class stamp is the right postage.)  Tim is a man of strong Christian faith.  Tim's wife Katrina is a periodic worshiper with her parents at Evergreen.
  3. Supporting an incarcerated brother -- Blake was relocated to Lynchburg last week, and may be relocated again this week.  Continue to pray for his peace, and for peaceful cell block-mates.

MISCELLANEOUS

  1. Just Curious... -- From Sunday's Info Cards, Evergreen Church includes successful growers of tomatos, radishes, black rasberries, concord grapes, zucchini, beans, flowers and cactus... oh yeah, and dandelions.
  2. Building Update --  The Building Team consists of committees that are created and/or called into action when specific responsibilities arise.  Examples include the Finance Committee, the Construction/Research Committee, and the Communications Committee.  If you'd like to be involved, there is likely a place for you.  To learn more about the building process, check out the "Growing Together... Building in Faith" link on our church homepage, www.EvergreenChurch.net or contact building team leader, Trevor Lanham, 737-6978, capsfan427@aol.com.
  3. Numbers from worship -- Last Sunday, 109 people of all ages gathered to worship God as Evergreen Church.  We presented to God $4,449 in offerings.  We can fully fund our ministry budget with $3,830/week.  Over the first fourteen weeks of 2008, we have offered $45,694.  Our ministry budget calls for $53,620.  We honor God and support His work through our church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service.  Thanks be to God.
  4. Evergreen's Financial Stewardship -- In explanation of the financial numbers provided above, our church leaders (led by the Leadership Team) is careful to not spend considerably more money than has been given/received.  So it is not the case that we currently have a $7,900 deficit for 2008.  But that $7,900 difference between the budget and our offerings does mean there are ministries that many ministry leaders think are very important that are not being able to be offered.  Leadership Team meetings (including tomorrow night's) and monthly financial reports are open to anyone who is interested.
  5. Prayer (to have your Evergreen family pray for you, send your concern to welcome@evergreenchurch.net by Wednesday morning with "E-letter prayer" in the subject)

Please pray for...

  •  Kimberlee Sams' family, as her grandmother passed away Sunday.
  • God to raise up the youth leader He wants to serve with us.
  • Tim (Ed & Janet Gorski's son-in-law), who is deployed with the US Army in Iraq.

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes I will remember your miracles of long ago.I will meditate on all Your works and consider all Your mighty deeds.Your ways, O God, are holy.  What god is so great as our God?
-Psalm 77:11-13

As ambassadors of Christ, through our prayers & actions, we will joyfully love and serve all God’s children.  In doing so, we will grow and nurture the body of Christ and our Evergreen Church family.
